Windmills

Windmills

Another of my favorite subjects I love to shoot is windmills.  Many people are attracted to them, their towering structure of angle iron and the blades of sheet steel and the directional tail pointing the direction of the wind.  Many are now just towers as their tops have long since blown down, gone with the winds of change.  This one still stands proud in rural Butler county Iowa.

Three Homes

Three Homes

Last weekend I did a lot of gravel travel and captured three homes that have been abandoned for twenty years or more, still standing, a little worse for wear but a tribute to te people who once lived in them and made them home for so many years.  They make great subject matter as one tries to picture who lived there, what hidden memories do the contain and what led to their demise.  One will never really know the answers but it tells a story to all who see them just a little different versions.

Dual Barns in Chickasaw

Dual Barns in Chickasaw

I spent the July 4th morning on a drive to Nashua Iowa.  On the way there I came across these two old barns on the same place and was glad to see the owners cared enough about preserving them to give them both a coat or two of red paint within the last couple of year I would imagine.  It did not appear they were being used for livestock but I bet this farm was busy in it’s prime.

Butler Center Pasture

Butler Center Pasture

Monday morning I stuck close to home and drove by the big marsh then ventured out towards the old townsite of Butler Center.  Butler Center was originally the county seat of Butler county until the railroad by-passed the town.  The town then relocated and they created the town of Allison which remains the county seat today.

Sometimes I come across a scene and just know this is the shot I was looking for.  The horse grazing with the sun rising and peaking through the clouds made for a perfect shot.
