Balltown Iowa

Balltown Iowa

Yesterday morning I was determined to go to Balltown Iowa to shoot from a high vantage point.  Balltown is a small town in north east Dubuque county and is approximately 120 miles from my home.  In order to catch the sunrise I would have to leave at 3:15am.  The summer sun rises at around 5:30.  I took off in time and the drive over to my final destination was uneventful however long.  Glad I brought a thermos full of coffee with to keep me company.

As I arrived the sun was just breaking the horizon and my fist stop was at the edge of Balltown where the town built a scenic overlook.  I took a couple of pics there but could not see the sun and decided to move down the road to the main overlook about a half mile further up the road.  I love the vantage point from this location as one can see all the way to the Mississippi River from here and on to Wisconsin.

Lake Beauty

Lake Beauty

A few more images of my Saturday morning visit to Beed’s Lake State Park near Hampton.  There is one lone maple tree that stands alone on the hiking trail that caught my eye.  This tree made a great minimalistic picture and the two shots below came out the best.  I like the portrait one with the fisherman at the bottom of the stairs also and the blues and greens of the image really pop, but then again I am partial to blue and green which was in abundance Saturday morning.  As usual these were done in HDR, and blended in Machinery HDR.

Beed’s Lake State Park

Yesterday morning there was no wind when I woke and I decided that Beed’s Lake State Park near Hampton Iowa would be a good location to shoot with the calm winds.  I was treated with a lake mist coming off the surface of the warm waters hitting the cooler air.  I really like the look of this photo with the lamp posts still lit.

Two barns Over The Weekend

Two barns Over The Weekend

Took a short drive on Sunday and managed to capture these two barns through a cloud filtered sky.  I really like how the sun appears on both of these images.  Shot with my Nikon D7100, Tokina 11-16mm @11mm for the first one.  Te second one Nikon D7100, Nikor 18-55mm @45mm.  Both are five shot HDR processed images.

Chasing Light

Chasing Light

The weather here has been very hot and dry the past few days with a lot of clear skies during the day.  The only interesting cloud patterns disappear quickly after the sun rises so it is a race to find an interesting spot for composition before they fade away.

Yesterday morning I went north, as the sun rises in the far northeast now with summer just a few days away.  It seems like time flies by anymore.  Along side of a blacktop in Floyd county Iowa I came across an abandoned farm with multiple silos but no longer a house, it made for a nice picture.

The Thresher

The Thresher

Todays morning drive I headed over to Shell Rock and fueled up at a gas station there.  I made no real plan for picture taking and decided to free style.  South of Shell Rock there is an old threshing machine parked at the end of an old abandoned driveway and I thought it would make a nice photo with the sun rising quickly.  It was a good view and I was glad I went there.

Memorial Day Morning

Memorial Day Morning

Another one of my favorite images from Memorial Day morning was in Spring Park west of Osage Iowa.  The Tokina lens is subject to lens flares but when avoided it creates beautiful sunbursts.
