Perseverance

Perseverance

It has been four years since I started this adventure in photography.  It started as a hobby and saw me go from a point and shoot Sony, to making barn wood frames and selling them on Ebay to get a enough money to afford my first Dslr camera, a Nikon D3200, I shot 60000 frames with that camera.  My hobby turned into a passion.  Last March I invested in the top end APS-C sensor a Nikon D7100.

Shot after shot with the D3200 and hours of reading and learning various techniques and hours of post processing in Corel Painshop brought me to making submissions to Our Iowa Magazine.  Last year it was the Winter issue and no images selected for publication.  I was going to submit some for Spring but after a discussion via email with the editor I elected not to submit at that time because I thought I did not have what they were looking for.

In July I contacted the editor and submitted a select 12 or so for consideration in the Autumn edition.   No word so I assumed there we none selected again.  I continue to shoot every weekend and as time warrants.  Yesterday I got home and notice the issue came only it was in a envelope not the usual plastic wrapper.  I assumed it was a renewal notice at my subscription was running out soon.

I also got a battery grip in the mail for my D7100 yesterday and I unboxed it an placed it on the camera.  Worked like a charm.  I went out to my porch to have a cigarette and opened up the envelope.  Inside the front cover was a letter informing me that my picture was selected for the issue and enclosed was a check for 200 dollars for publication.  Wow!  Finally made it and it was a full page spread.

Below is the cover letter and the image they selected.  It was one of the last Autumn pictures of the season as most of the tree had been stripped of their foliage but a few oaks trees still had their color.  They are the last in our area to shed their leaves and some years keep them into Winter.  So the moral of this story is one word Perseverance.  Steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.  Lesson learned.

Iowa Autumn Floods

Iowa Autumn Floods

Last week brought torrential rain fall to the area, one area had 12.9″ in two days.  This also brought flooding beyond belief for this time of year and is seldom seen in September, usually a dry month.  Greene, Clarksville and Shell Rock saw severe flooding of their towns.  Where I live we were much luckier as we only received 3″ and are only 15 miles away from the record setting rainfall.

The pictures are from the Big Marsh in the southern part of the county and it took until today to flood the whole marsh into a large shallow lake, something I have not seen since 2014.

German Lutheran Church

German Lutheran Church

I headed north to Decorah Iowa Sunday morning and my first stop was the Old Stone Church southwest of Ridgeway.  I was wanting to get there for some night photography but only managed to take a few pictures before twilight took over the sky.  An interesting building and amazing how it has stood for decades.  It seems so out of place in Iowa.  Below is an excerpt from another website with the history of the church.
